Membership Categories SD SHRM classifies memberships into one of four categories: Professional, General, Associate or Student.
Professional Membership: For individuals who are engaged in the profession of human resource management and who meet one of the criteria below:
- At least three years of exempt-level human resource experience;
- Certification by the Human Resource Certification Institute (HRCI) or its predecessor, the Personnel Accreditation Institute (PAI), as a Senior Professional in Human Resources (SPHR) or Professional in Human Resources (PHR);
- Faculty members holding assistant, associate or full professor rank in human resource management or any of its specialized functions at an accredited college or university, and who have at least three years of experience at this level of teaching;
- Full-time consultants with at least three years of management experience as a human resource practitioner and whose practice is primarily directly related to the practice of human resource management;
- Attorneys with at least three years of primary practice in any of the following areas: labor and employment law and/or employee benefits (e.g., pension, retirement, 401(k), Sec. 125, health and welfare plans, ESOPs, or workers' compensation).
Professional members may vote, serve on committees and hold office on the Board of Directors.
General Membership: For individuals who are or were engaged in the profession of human resource management in an exempt position, but do not meet the requirements of Professional Membership.
- Individuals who possess less than three years of exempt-level human resource management experience;
- Persons engaged in fields of work closely related to the human resource profession. Examples include attorneys (other than those specified under the Professional category above), employment agencies, executive search firms, temporary employment services, outplacement, relocation, public employment agencies, and consultants not otherwise categorized. However, to qualify, individuals of such firms must be a partner, the senior executive or owner of the local facility;
- Individuals whose responsibilities include the human resource function.
General Members have the right to vote and serve on Committees, but may not hold office on the Board of Directors.
Associate Membership: Individuals in non-exempt human resource management positions, as well as graduates of a bachelor's degree or professional certificate program with major emphasis in the human resource field.
Associate Members may serve on committees, but may not vote or hold office on the Board of Directors.
Student Membership: Individuals who are actively enrolled in human resource programs at an accredited college or university and who meet one of the criteria below:
- An individual maintaining at least 12 semester or 9 quarter hours in a bachelor's-degree-granting program with major emphasis in the human resource field;
- An individual enrolled in a professional human resource certificate program requiring a minimum of 24 semester or 36 quarter units from an accredited college or university.
