SDSU Student Chapter Earns National SHRM Recognition

Casie Martinez, 2013-2014 SDSU SHRM President

The San Diego State University chapter of SHRM (SDSU SHRM) set very aggressive goals for ourselves for the 2013-2014 academic year. First and foremost, we wanted to win National SHRM’s highest honor, the merit award for Outstanding Student Chapter. We meticulously planned 10 professional development and networking events, competed in SHRM’s Regional Case Competition, implemented a recruitment and succession plan, created their first community service project, engaged more than 30 alumni, fundraised over $17,000, wrote advocacy letters and promoted SHRM not just to win, but to benefit the chapter and help the members grow.

Through our partnership with SD SHRM, we were able to put on our mentoring event that ultimately won us the award for excellence in programming and education. This year, 122 of 450 student chapters applied for merit award consideration (the four levels of merit awarded by SHRM include Honorable Mention, Merit, Superior Merit, and Outstanding). SDSU SHRM was awarded the Outstanding Student Chapter Award, placing it in the top 5 percent of student SHRM chapters nationwide.

SD SHRM’s Commitment to SDSU Increases Student Participation in SD SHRM Events

As soon as Natasha Sandrock Arthur began her presidency, she committed herself to helping us better our student chapter. She has given us the opportunity to attend all SD SHRM events. To date, we have attended the February Compliance event with Richard Simmons, dinner with Cy Wakeman in March, the April Accountability breakfast with Jan Zaragoza, Sexual Harassment with Hollis Peterson and Immigration and Visas with The AIM Agency in May. The students that have attended say that the HR professionals are very welcoming and the students feel very comfortable asking questions.

In addition to attending events, our members participate in the Workforce Readiness and Membership Committees, providing the “Emerging Professionals” perspective. We also have several members who attend the bi-monthly career clinics offered by Linda Kurtz. Students say the events are very helpful and are grateful that they can attend. Students plan on becoming more involved once school starts in the fall. Natasha has also given our president a non-voting seat on the Board of Directors. This is an invaluable experience both personally and professionally and it solidifies the commitment that Natasha and San Diego SHRM has made to our organization.

Thank you Natasha & SD SHRM!
