For our first SHRM SDSU Speaker Series Event held on September 21st, we welcomed Nancy Arenas, HR Consultant and West Coast Regional Associate Director, Willis Towers Watson. She discussed the importance of HR along with giving an overview of typical HR roles and responsibilities.

We welcomed SHRM SDSU alumni Casie Martinez and Patricia Rosiles for our second SHRM SDSU Speaker Series Event on October 5^th. Casie and Patricia delivered a thorough and informative presentation on the job search process. Members gained insight on several topics including advice on cover letters, networking, and LinkedIn etiquette.

On October 19^th, SHRM SDSU had our last SHRM SDSU Speaker Series Event featuring professional development consultant, Mark Lindner. He gave a very compelling presentation on the best ways to create a personal brand. He used relatable examples and provided various tips for members to use as they begin to promote themselves, both socially and professionally.

SHRM SDSU hosted our annual HR Young Professionals Panel on November 2^nd. We had four young professionals: Jasleen Aguilar, Julia Denbaugh, Jolene McKee, and Neil Palmer sit on a panel to answer a series of questions related to their careers. They shared crucial pieces of advice from interview tips to how and when to negotiate a salary. Our members asked multiple questions of the panelists as recent alums who are now finding success in their HR careers.

Prior to the start of the Fall semester, we learned that we had received the SHRM Superior Merit Award for our chapter’s excellence and achievement during the 2020-2021 SHRM merit year.

As our Fall semester has come to an end, I am happy to announce our newly elected SHRM SDSU executive officers for the Spring 2022 semester: Jordan Reyes (President), Eric MacPherson (Vice President), Vaishnavi Sridhar (Secretary), Calista Dao (Treasurer). Additionally, the new director-level officers consist of; Ayah Bayasi (Co-Marketing and Media Director), Khang Trinh (Co-Marketing and Media Director), Kira Cashman (CBC Representative), John De Gula (Events Coordinator), Azareel Canizales (SD SHRM Liaison), Emily Liner (Technology Director), Stephanie Tran (Development Director), Jenna Green (Corporate Relations), Mackenna Teeman (Member Relations Director), Ashley Brown (Alumni Relations Director), and Jose Rodriguez (Historian). Best wishes to our incoming Spring 2022 officers!

Spring 2022 SHRM SDSU Officers

We had a great ending to our first semester back in person, and we are excited to continue to host in-person programming this coming Spring. We have already started planning lots of great events. As we continue to plan for our Spring semester, we are always looking for guest speakers to speak to our chapter.  We are looking forward to planning our annual HR Speed Mentoring Event which will take place on Tuesday, April 12^th from 4:00 – 6:00 p.m.  This event will take place virtually.  If you are interested in participating as a speed mentor or being a guest speaker in our speaker series, we would love to hear from you!  Please email us at shrmsdsu.president@gmail.com

As my time with SDSU and SHRM SDSU has come to an end, I would like to give my sincere gratitude to San Diego SHRM for the support they have provided, not only to me, but also for our entire student chapter. It has been a pleasure attending the board meetings, and I look forward to continuing to stay engaged with both SHRM SDSU and San Diego SHRM.

San Diego SHRM Awarded For Elevating Human Resources And Improving Workplaces

SAN DIEGO, Calif., June 15, 2020 — SHRM (the Society for Human Resource Management) recently awarded San Diego Society for Human Resource Management (San Diego SHRM) its prestigious EXCEL Platinum Award for the Chapter’s accomplishments in 2019.

The EXCEL award is given to state councils and chapters to recognize major accomplishments, strategic activities, and tactical initiatives that elevate the profession of human resources.

“So much of SHRM’s impact on the world of work can be traced back to the dedication and hard work of our chapters and state councils like San Diego SHRM. These leaders took the initiative and drove changes to make workplaces where employers and employees can thrive together,” said Johnny C. Taylor, Jr., SHRM-SCP, president and chief executive officer of SHRM. “The Platinum EXCEL Award is not only a celebration of the great work done by San Diego SHRM—it’s also a recognition of the grit it took to do it.”

The EXCEL Award can be earned at four levels: bronze, silver, gold and platinum. Each level has a prescribed set of requirements and accomplishments that must be met. San Diego SHRM will receive recognition in SHRM publications and at conferences, a logo to display on its website, and information to share with its members about the significance of this award.

In 2019, San Diego SHRM was acknowledged for Enhancing the SHRM Community with an increase in membership by 14.8%. In the area of Advancing the HR Profession, San Diego SHRM has made a commitment to build strong relationships with two student SHRM chapters: San Diego State University and California State University San Marcos. San Diego SHRM hosted the 5^th Annual HR Career Day open to all college students interested in learning about HR as a profession. They launched a Mentor Program and hosted Emerging Professional networking events. San Diego SHRM was recognized for Serving HR Professionals by reinventing their annual conference into a two-day conference and increased attendance by 30.8%. Also, in this area of Serving HR Professionals, they introduced a dedicated Career Center where companies can post open HR positions and individuals can share their resumes.

HR Analytics Workshop

The workshop will be held over 3 Saturdays from 9:00 am to 12:30 pm (October 12, 19 and 26).

By leveraging the power of data, HR professionals can use HR metrics and analytics to contribute to organizational decision-making processes. This workshop will provide an overview of HR analytics as well as several hands-on demonstrations. Participants will learn to conduct analyses using open-source software and how to critically examine and present insights that can be used to drive organizational change.

Andy has been involved with the SDSU HR program and the SDSU SHRM chapter since their very early stages and his participation has played an important role in helping to build a strong foundation for educating HR students.  His commitment to the professional development and success of SDSU HR students has spanned nearly a decade.  Andy generously gives his financial support and his time to students, making multiple trips to SDSU from Austin every semester.  Some of his efforts include sponsoring and helping to organize two site visits for SHRM students, one to Dell’s headquarters in Austin in 2014 and also at Baker Hughes (where he was serving as its CHRO) in Houston, TX in 2016, speaking to students in HR classes and at SHRM events each semester, meeting with SHRM students each semester advising and mentoring officers and with leadership and career advice, co-coaching the SDSU HR case competition team (this year’s team coming in first place in the 2018 CalSHRM Case Competition), and mentoring students after graduation, including tapping into his expertise in executive development to develop an early career workshop for a number of early career SHRM alums to help them plan their next steps.  Additionally, he and his wife, Karen, have generously funded the chapter, enabling the chapter to provide students a wide range of co-curricular professional development experiences including regularly sponsoring students to attend San Diego SHRM events and the SHRM Annual Conference and Exposition.  Each semester they sponsor the Andy and Karen Esparza Internship Scholarship which is awarded to a student who is gaining HR experience in an unpaid internship.  SDSU will award its 6th Esparza HR Internship Scholarship recipient this spring.

Andy has received multiple honors for his outstanding commitment to SDSU students including the 2014 & 2015 Aztec Achievement Award for Outstanding Alumni from SDSU Associated Students, 2014 Honorary Alumni Award from the SDSU Chapter of Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society, the 2015 SDSU Monty Award, and the 2017 & 2018 Fowler College of Business Council Outstanding Alumni Award.  His support of the chapter’s efforts has also a played a role in the chapter receiving multiple national SHRM awards including receiving the SHRM Outstanding Chapter Awards four times in five years (most recently in 2018).  This is a recognition given by SHRM annually to the top twelve SHRM student chapters nationwide. 

Andy is greatly admired and respected for his personal involvement in and commitment to HR students’ professional development and success.  He serves as an excellent role model for how HR professionals can give back to the profession and use their resources and expertise to prepare the next generation of HR professionals.

Welcome to 2019 San Diego SHRM Colleagues!

This year I have two special projects to shepherd under the umbrella of special projects 1) our HR Career Days and 2) form a committee to develop a San Diego SHRM Signature Event to be rolled out in 2020.

Let me explain a little about each one and the potential involvement you may want to have with these programs. 

HR CAREER DAYS – April 2019

This will be the 4th annual HR Career Day.  It was held last year at César Chávez San Diego Continuing Education Campus downtown and included Lunch and activities to engage and encourage attendees to look at the value of HR as a profession. We engaged over 20 students from our SDSU, CSUSM and Veteran’s Communities interested in HR as a profession in a lively interaction with 16 HR professionals who shared their time, talent and treasure to help the students get a better grasp on what it takes to get into the profession and to build a sustainable HR Career.  We also provide a on hour developmental program on being an effective candidate.  Those who attended all shared that it was an excellent and valuable opportunity.  We have door prizes and SHADOW DAYS in an HR OFFICE as attendee give aways.  The next HR Career Day will be held on Friday, April 19 again at the César Chávez San Diego Continuing Education Campus downtown.

SIGNATURE EVENT – Planning 2020
