SHRM SDSU Had a Great Virtual Spring Semester

SHRM SDSU had a great virtual Spring semester and ended strong with many professional development and social events for students. We had our bi-annual Kick-Off Event on February 9^th where we shared valuable information to current and prospective members about the benefits of being involved in SHRM SDSU. We had our Executive-in-Residence, Andy Esparza, share the benefits of joining our chapter and inspire members. Many SHRM SDSU alumni were able to join us virtually and share testimonials of their experience and how SHRM helped them to launch their careers. 

For our first SHRM Speaker Series Event held on February 23^rd, we invited Dr. Bob Nelson, a multi-million copy bestselling author of numerous books. He shared great tips for managing virtual employees and how students can, likewise, be good virtual employees. All attendees for this virtual event received a copy of the book, The Virtual Manager.       

We welcomed David Ramirez from Western Digital for our second SHRM Speaker Series Event, on March 9^th, where he discussed the growing interest in HR People Analytics. Students learned about the importance of using data, and the importance of collecting and using the right data. He provided a helpful step-by-step example of the process he uses to answer HR questions using analytics.

On March 23^rd, at the last SHRM Speaker Series Event, the co-founder of The People Collective, Guissu Baier, spoke on the topic of How to Build a Company Culture, Even During a Pandemic. She explained to students the importance of communication, both in-person and virtually among other outstanding strategic insights on how to build better relationships and promote a healthy and happy workplace. 

SHRM SDSU’s last and largest event of the year was the 7^th Annual HR Speed Mentoring Event which occurred virtually this year on April 13^th, where we were lucky to have 29 different mentors available to help our members. We had four, 15-minute sessions where students were able to speak with mentors of their choosing, asking them questions on professional development to prepare them for their HR careers. We wanted to thank all the mentors who made this event a success! We also want to congratulate our 2021 SHRM SDSU Natasha Sandrock Arthur Outstanding Service Award Recipient, Stan Sewitch. Stan hosted an HR event with the WD-40 Company Global HR team and a group of our HR students in Spring 2019 that was enjoyed by all in attendance. SHRM SDSU thanks all of our outstanding alumni who continue to support the chapter by staying engaged after graduation and offering their advice to members.

We also want to recognize our members who received Business Achievement Awards on April 21^st from the Fowler College of Business Council. We were ecstatic that SHRM SDSU’s College of Business Council Representative, Alek Casillas, received the Outstanding Council of Business Council Representative Award. We were also overjoyed that our Executive-in-Residence, Andy Esparza, received the Business Achievement Award for Outstanding Alumni.

As our Spring semester has come to an end, I am happy to announce the new SHRM SDSU executive officers for the coming semester; Luis Rodriguez (President), Grace Coulter (Vice President), Danielle Lopez (Secretary), Jordan Reyes (Treasurer). Additionally, the new director level officers consist of; Ariel Jasmine Sabas (Co-Marketing and Media Director), Calista Dao (Co-Marketing and Media Director), Samantha Peters (College of Business Council Representative), Brooke Vu (Information Systems Director), Serena Santoro (Alumni Relations Director), Jenna Green (Development Director), C’yana Boone-Nelson (Member Relations Director), Vaishnavi Sridhar (Events Coordinator), Ayah Bayasi (Historian), Lauren Engelking (San Diego SHRM Liaison), and John De Gula (San Diego HR Forum Liaison). Best wishes to our incoming Fall 2021 officers!

We had a great ending to the virtual Spring semester, and we are excited to be back in person this coming Fall. We have already started planning lots of great events. As we continue to plan for our Fall semester, we are always looking for guest speakers to come and speak to our chapter. As my time with SDSU and SHRM SDSU has come to an end, I would like to thank San Diego SHRM for the support they have provided, not only me, but for our entire chapter. I have had a great time during the board meetings and look forward to continuing to stay engaged with both SHRM SDSU and SD SHRM.

Introduction to our Spring 2021 SHRM SDSU president

Hello! My name is Anna Freeman, and I am the President for the SDSU SHRM chapter for Spring 2021. I am very excited to work closely with our members, alums, and HR professionals who all share the same passion for HR.

Our Executive officer team; Luis Rodriguez (Vice President), Paul Dominguez (Secretary), and Joseph Escandon (Treasurer) along with our advisor, Dr. Michelle Dean, have been planning hard over the winter break to prepare for this upcoming semester.

Our first event is our Spring Kick-Off Event, in which we provide the benefits of our chapter to SDSU students and allow them to learn more about what our organization can offer. We will be having our Executive in Residence, Andy Esparza, share his advice on HR and the benefits of joining SDSU SHRM. For our second event, we welcome multi-million copy best selling author, Dr. Bob Nelson, to talk on managing virtual employees. For our third event, we will have David Ramirez from Western Digital speak to us about HR people analytics. For our last speaker event for the semester we will host Guissu Baier, co-founder of The People Collective, speak to us on creating an organizational culture, even during a pandemic. 

We are also looking forward to our annual HR Speed Mentoring Event on April 13th. Many SD SHRM members have participated in this event in the past, and we are hoping to have many participate again this year as well! Our event will be different this year as it will need to be held virtually, so mentors and mentees will be participating from the comfort of their laptop rather than joining us on campus. This event was cancelled last year due to the pandemic, and we are excited to bring it back this year in this alternative format. Here, students will be able to receive advice and talk to HR professionals. Our student chapter is very excited for this upcoming semester and all the events that we have planned. We are also very excited to partner with San Diego SHRM and appreciate all the support we receive to prepare to enter the HR profession. 

News from the San Diego State University SHRM Chapter

Like many of us, SHRM SDSU had to abruptly adapt to the changes that came along with the COVID-19 pandemic. With all of us adjusting to a new “normal,” our chapter also had to quickly pivot our meetings, events, and even our Fall 2020 elections to be virtual. Although we did the best we could to quickly transform our events last minute, we unfortunately could not make the switch for our Annual Speed Mentoring Event (but we plan on hosting this event virtually next semester in Spring!). However, for the rest of the Spring semester, as President, I was able to coordinate and mobilize our officers to deliver a Pre-Conference Workshop, two Chapter Planning Meetings, and the Fall 2020 Officer Elections--all virtually. Our efforts to transition to virtual were highlighted in a recent SDSU article .

This semester for Fall 2020, we are pleased to announce that SHRM SDSU has transitioned our Speaker Events and Chapter Planning Meetings to be completely virtual via Zoom. At the beginning of every semester, we always have our officers make classroom visits to pitch our chapter and pass around an interest list. Since that was not a possibility to do this Fall semester, the executive officer team decided to get together over the summer to create a quick video to introduce our chapter and the many benefits that come with becoming a member. This video was sent to the professors to send out to their students to encourage them to stay engaged with on campus organizations even in a remote learning environment.

With newly implemented marketing tactics, we were able to host a successful Fall 2020 Kick-Off Event via Zoom that brought in a wave of new members. We have also hosted four events in our speaker series including a Cover Letter & Interviewing Workshop, a presentation on Emotional Intelligence presented by SD SHRM’s very own Amanda Duff, a Personal Branding Workshop with Mark Lindner, and an HR Professionals Panel featuring five of our SHRM SDSU alums: Devan Probert, Christine Higgins, Stephanie Grungruth, Lexi Saba, and Suzette Montellano.

Some upcoming events of note include our chapter having a team competing at the CalSHRM HR Case Competition and Student Summit on November 14-15.  The team has been practicing cases and honing their case analysis skills for the past two months with our Faculty Advisor, Dr. Michelle Dean and our Executive-in-Residence, Andy Esparza. Our team consists of SDSU SHRM officers Anna Freeman, Luis Rodriguez, Paul Dominguez, and Joseph Escandon.  We wish the team good luck!  Our members are also looking forward to attending San Diego SHRM’s 5th Annual HR Career Day on November 13th!  It has been a great Fall semester so far and as it winds down, we are preparing to hold our second virtual SHRM Officer Election to install our Spring 2021 officer group.

The SDSU Management Department has approximately 60 management students (including HR students) enrolled in the internship course this summer. The university is mandating that internships for school credit taking place over the summer must be done remotely due to COVID-19. SHRM SDSU had a great Fall semester with a number of professional development events for our students.  For our first SHRM Speaker Series Event of the fall semester, we were honored to have Patti Perez, VP of Workplace Culture at Emtrain and author of the new book, The Drama-free Workplace: How you can Prevent Unconscious Bias, Sexual Harassment, Ethics Lapses, and Inspire a Healthy Culture.  She discussed ways to promote a positive, inclusive workplace culture when we get into our HR careers. Members were excited to get to speak with her one-on-one after the talk and receive a signed copy of her book for our members in attendance. It was an amazing kick off to our Fall semester!

SHRM SDSU hosted a Resume Workshop in collaboration with SDSU Career Services Career Peers. Career Peers presented the basics and tips of how to craft your professional resume. Thank you Career Services for helping our members get their resumes in shape. Attendees learned a lot on perfecting resumes and honing their networking skills. 

Members enjoyed our October SHRM Speaker Series guest speaker, Mark Lindner, General Manager of MillerCoors, and Fowler College of Business supporter.  Mark shared his experience and knowledge on how to create a personal brand in the workplace and tips for salary negotiation.

Our last Fall SHRM Speaker Series Event was our HR Young Professionals Panel.  We had five SHRM SDSU alumni share their knowledge, early HR career experiences, and answered student questions (pictured, from the left: Mollie Sreden, Travis Doderlein, Steven Diab, Angelica Prout, Julia Denbaugh, and Patricia Rosiles). Our chapter thanks all of our outstanding alumni who continue to support the chapter and stay engaged after graduation.

News from the San Diego State University SHRM Chapter

On May 18^th weekend, many of our officers and members, including myself, graduated at San Diego State University. It has been a month since the school semester has ended and many of our student members became SDSU alumni entering the workforce as HR professionals.

Our SHRM SDSU graduates: Angelica Prout, Julia Denbaugh, Suzette Kaminski, Sandy Athniel, Sayra Flores, Hallie Roberts, Jessica Nash-Odom, Alexis Conde, Sabrina Cremascoli, and Jessica Palmer  

On May 22^nd, Vincent Young and I were able to attend the San Diego SHRM Breakfast Program “Navigating the Landmines of Social Media in the Workplace”. We learned how social media can be beneficial to employees, customers and future employees when used properly, but may also bring legal issues when not. Shauna Sinnott, Partner at Andrews Lagasse Branch + Bell LLP, presented how to protect your company from exposure to legal issues involving social media regarding employment, such as monitoring, discipline, recruiting, and more.

On June 11^th, a handful of our students and recent alumni attended the San Diego SHRM Emerging Professionals Event at Ballast Point Brewery to network with other HR professionals in the San Diego community. Many recent alumni were able to mingle with future employers and other emerging professionals in the San Diego community interested in the field of HR.

On June 22^nd, SHRM SDSU sent 18 of our students to attend the 2019 SHRM Annual Conference and Exposition in Las Vegas. Many of our students attended sessions in efforts to learn and obtain professional development opportunities. During the Emerging Professional Sunday Session on June 23^rd, SHRM SDSU was presented the Outstanding Student Chapter Award for the 2018-2019 academic year. This is the highest merit designation given annually to the top twelve student chapters nationwide. This is our 5^th time in the past 6 years we have received this top merit award.  Thank you to our Fall 2018 and Spring 2019 officers for all your efforts to make this award possible!  We also enjoyed seeing our fellow San Diego SHRM chapter at the conference and look forward to participating in the SHRM Annual Conference and Exposition here in San Diego next year!

As my time serving as the SDSU chapter liaison to San Diego SHRM has come to an end, I would like to thank San Diego SHRM for the time I spent attending Board of Directors meetings. Working with San Diego SHRM for the past two years has been fun and rewarding. I have grown so much professionally and personally, have gained knowledge and insight on the latest HR laws and trends, and met numerous people that let to many opportunities, for not just myself, but for our student chapter.  We appreciate the partnership and continued support that San Diego SHRM provides to students and emerging HR professionals.  I have enjoyed watching our chapter grow with our student-to-professional initiatives and become more involved in the San Diego HR community. Though I will be passing the baton to the next Fall semester to our next student chapter President, Katherine Mackenzie, I look forward to continuing to be involved with both San Diego SHRM and SHRM SDSU.  Best wishes to our incoming Fall 2019 officers, and I’ll look forward to seeing you at future events!

SHRM SDSU finished the semester strong with many professional development and social events. On April 8^th, SHRM SDSU attended the Fowler College of Business Council Achievement Awards ceremony where we were honored to receive four out of eight categories. Congratulations to our SHRM recipients: Andy Esparza - Outstanding Alumni Award, Dr. Michelle Dean - Best Faculty Involvement, Danilo Urquia - Outstanding College of Business Council Representative, and Arturo Fernandez Rios - Outstanding Undergraduate Student. Arturo was also selected as a recipient of SDSU’s annual Quest for the Best Award. This award celebrates 10 high-achieving SDSU students for outstanding performance in academics and community service. Arturo honored Professor Dean by naming her his most influential professor at SDSU and presented her with a faculty Quest for the Best Award. Congratulations to all of our SHRM award recipients!

On April 10^th, select student organization leaders, including SHRM executive officers, were invited to join the Fowler College of Business private luncheon with George Anders, LinkedIn Senior Editor at Large. He spoke to the group about developing our personal brand with digital-media tools to become career-ready and to make our job search both easier and more successful. Later in the evening, SHRM SDSU joined with the SDSU Management Department and Professor Dan Eaton’s Legal Issues in HR class to meet with WD-40’s global HR professionals and CEO, Garry Ridge. The students interacted with both domestic and international HR leaders to learn more about the WD-40 company tribe story and how they turned a great company into a community of belonging.

On April 16^th, we held our 6^th Annual HR Professional Speed Mentoring Event. At this event we awarded our 2019 Natasha Sandrock Arthur Outstanding Service Award to Nina Woodard, Chief 'N' Sights Officer of Nina E. Woodard & Associates. We were pleased to be able to honor Nina for her continued commitment to serve the next generation of HR professionals via her in her role as CalSHRM’s College Relations Director. At the event, our students received lots of great advice and tips for entering the HR field. A huge thank you to San Diego SHRM for holding their monthly board meeting at SDSU to facilitate having multiple board members participate in our event. We are truly grateful for San Diego SHRM’s dedication and commitment to HR student success.

On April 18^th, myself and SHRM SDSU alum, Katherine Santos, attended the San Diego SHRM Breakfast Program “The Anatomy of an Employment Lawsuit and the Tools for Prevention,” presented by Marie Kenny and Bob Levy at Corporate Alliance. The event provided a great overview on addressing HR legals issues and how to prevent them through best practices.

On April 23^rd, we held our Fall 2019 officer elections. Congratulations to our new officers: President Katherine Mackenzie, Vice President Kelly Huynh, Secretary Luis Rodriguez, Treasurer Biana Moro, Marketing & Social Media Director Kylie Bergen, CBC Representative and SDHR Forum Liaison Vincent Young, San Diego SHRM Liaison Marcus Campagna, and Development Director Daniel Armstrong. On April 26^th, I was able to attend the San Diego SHRM’s 4^th Annual HR Career Day to network and connect with HR Professionals to hear their insights, passion, and journey as an HR professional. April 26^th was a busy day as we also held our SHRM SDSU annual Officer Recognition Dinner.  This is a great event where we recognize the work of our current officer team, welcome our new officers, and network with SHRM SDSU alums.  In our efforts to continue to grow and provide professional development opportunities for our members, in June, we look forward to sending 18 students to the 2019 SHRM Annual Conference and Exposition in Las Vegas.

It has been a busy two months for our chapter with many ­exciting professional events! On February 12^th, we started the semester strong with our Spring Kick Off Event with Andy Esparza, our Executive-in-Residence, to share the benefits of joining our chapter.

On February 20^th, our members had a great time attending the SD SHRM Breakfast Program with Patti Perez talk about 'The Essential Guide to "Hike" to the Top of the Healthy Workplace Culture Pyramid!' at Sony Electronics. On February 24^th, our fellow SHRM officers Angelica Prout, Kimi Railey, and Vincent Young tabled at the Super Sunday Gospel Fest Local Resource Fair to share the San Diego community about human resources and our impact as a SHRM SDSU student chapter. On February 26^th, we partnered with SDSU Career Services for an exciting Resumania event. Career Peer and our Info Systems Director, Katherine MacKenzie, led this presentation with her fellow Career Peers in providing many tips on how to better highlight our experiences along with networking tips and etiquette.

On March 9^th, our SHRM members volunteered the La Jolla Community Clean Up with I Love a Clean San Diego and Councilmember Barbara Bry in stenciling storm drains and cleaning up the community. The same day, our members Kelly Huynh and Katherine MacKenzie attended the Diversity Career Conference. The conference geared towards students who identify with communities that are historically underrepresented in professional settings, such as communities of color, military veterans, the LGBTQ community, and those with disabilities. On March 12^th, we had Corporate Recruiters Allison KuyKendall and Samantha Strodel from Medix to speak about tips and tricks on successfully entering the workforce.

On March 20^th, our members had a great time networking with new members and professionals at the San Diego SHRM March Member Mixer at Brian Malarkey’s Green Acre. On March 23^rd, our SHRM SDSU student chapter was invited to table at Explore SDSU to represent the Business Village. Many of our members volunteered their time to share their passion and knowledge for human resources to incoming SDSU freshmen and transfer students and practice their recruiting skills to encourage future students to join our SHRM student chapter for the upcoming Fall semester. On March 26^th, we had the pleasure of having Mark Lindner, General Manager of MillerCoors, speak about how your personal branding can help you close the deal.

As we are half way into the semester, we have our most anticipated professional development event of the semester, our Sixth Annual HR Professional Speed Mentoring Event will be taking place on Tuesday, April 16^th from 4:00 to 6:00pm! We would like to thank San Diego SHRM and our mentors in advance for their dedication in being a part of our program. We cannot wait for this highly interactive mentoring event and the opportunity to connect with many HR professionals.

Happy 2019! We finished the year strong with our case competition team winning the 2018 CalSHRM Case Competition and holding officer elections to install a new team to lead us through the spring semester. I am excited to announce our officers for this semester: President: Angelica Prout, Vice President: Xala Glover-Pamittan, Secretary: Kelly Huynh, Treasurer: Lorena Espinosa, Marketing & Media Director: Nicole Torres, College of Business Representative: Danilo Urquia, Events Coordinator: Julia Denbaugh, SD SHRM Liaison: Kimi Railey, Information Systems: Katherine Mackenzie, Development Director: Marissa Bass, Corporate Relations: Suzette Kaminski, Member Relations: Luis Rodriguez, Alumni Relations: Hallie Roberts, Historian: Jessica Nash-Odom. I am excited to work with our new team and can’t wait to see what our officers will accomplish this semester!

On December 12th, SHRM SDSU members Luis Rodriguez, Alexis Conde, Hallie Roberts, Kylie Bergen, Xala Glover-Pamittan, Angelica Prout, and Vincent Young attended the San Diego SHRM Membership Holiday Mixer at the future home of the Comic-Con Museum in Balboa Park. Our members enjoyed the great food, venue, raffle prizes, and networking.

On January 16th, I had to opportunity to attend San Diego SHRM’s Breakfast Program “Transform Your Life and Business with the Ideal Conversational Cocktail” with Dr. Elizabeth Fried. With engaging exercises, the audience learned how to create better interactive questions that captivate people’s attention and encourage more meaningful conversations.

Looking ahead to this semester, we are thrilled to have many professional events planned for our students. On February 12th, we will begin the semester with our Spring Kick-Off, sharing the benefits of being involved with the SHRM student chapter as well as being involved with San Diego SHRM. Our guest speaker at this event will be Andrew Esparza, SHRM SDSU’s Executive-in-Residence. The theme for our efforts this semester is “Student to Professional” with events including Resumania with Allison Kuykendall, a Personal Branding/Negotiation Skills workshop with Mark Lindner, alumni mentoring, our 6th Annual HR Professional Mentoring Event, and attending the 2019 SHRM Annual Conference and Exposition in Las Vegas this summer.  

Our 6th Annual HR Professional Mentoring Event will take place on Tuesday, April 16th from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. We are very excited for this highly anticipated mentoring event and cannot wait to network with San Diego HR professionals! During this event, students have the opportunity to connect with HR professionals in 6-minute intervals to ask questions and learn more about this amazing field. As a mentor, you are able to serve as a resource to students, helping them to hone their networking skills, giving your perspective on HR, and/or offering quick advice on how they can prepare now to enter the field. We always look forward to having SD SHRM members participate in this event!
